Thriller writer, Andrew Peterson, captivated a full house at our February meeting. Delving into the nuts and bolts of creating a successful thriller novel, Andrew shared his experience with editors, networking dreams-come-true, and even some secrets that helped him reach his goal. He treated us to his "Ten Tips" for writing better fiction, explaining the personal importance of basics such as point of view and conflict, and the importance of creating compelling scenes through which the reader can "see" what's going on.
We all know that a good thiller needs a hero. But how do you create one? What IS a good hero? Andrew deconstructed his ideal hero and played out those characteristics that set a compelling protagonist apart from the masses. "How Bad Can Your Good Guy Be?" is the question that frames Andrew's successful creation.
Closing with his personal publication experience with First to Kill, Andrew provided inspiration, insight, and excitement to his appreciative audience. Thank you, Andy, for an outstanding program and for donating the proceeds of the evening's sales of First to Kill to CCW. |
Copies of First to Kill were donated by Andrew's publisher for sale at our February meeting.
All the proceeds went to support CCW. Thank you Andrew!

Born and raised in San Diego, California, Andrew Peterson earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture at the University of Oklahoma. Andrew began to write fiction in 1990. He sold a short story, "Mr. Haggarty's Stop," to San Diego Writers Monthly in October, 1992. He continued to write, exploring both the novel form and screenplays. It wasn't until he attended his first writer's conference in 2005, that he became serious about writing the Nathan McBride stories.
First to Kill is Andrew Peterson's debut novel, and is available nationwide from Leisure Fiction, an imprint of Dorchester Publishing. The audio book rights for First to Kill have been secured by Audible.com. He is currently working on the next novel in a planned series, featuring the "brutally effective" former Marine Corps sniper and ex-CIA operative, Nathan McBride.
Andrew is a helicopter pilot and volunteer firefighter in southern Monterey County. He also enjoys technical scuba diving and has mapped underwater caves in the Yucatan and explored the deep shipwrecks on the Bikini Atoll where the atomic bomb tests were conducted. He has also won numerous marksmanship competitions throughout the Southwestern United States. Andrew and his wife, Carla, live somewhat off the grid near the central coast of California.
