CCW FORMING WRITER INTEREST GROUPS
Looking to learn from the masters of your genre? Want to get together with others to discuss the writing process? Need feedback on your work? If so, the Central Coast Writers Branch of the California Writers Club has a special interest group for you. Reader/writer groups Reader/writer groups recognize that writers are eager and attentive readers, that reading and writing are intertwined, and that reading feeds writing. Generally, the group (or facilitator) chooses a book to read and the group meets at a regular time and place to discuss it. Different groups could focus on specific areas of writing interest, such as creative non-fiction/memoir, historical fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc. Writing support groups These groups provide positive encouragement throughout the writing process without critique. They can include discussion of process and resources. Writing exercises or prompts are often used to produce quick writing during the meetings. Group members often read their own work (or that of other group members if requested) to the group. Reading one's work aloud or hearing it read can provide the distance necessary to hear what works and what needs work. Writing critique groups Members of critique groups usually share their work before meetings so written and oral critiques can be thoughtful and detailed. Reading other's work critically and carefully can improve your own writing while getting detailed comments on your work can help you see it as others do. Before joining a critique group, ask yourself: Will I be comfortable having others evaluate my work? Can I devote the time necessary to read and comment on other's work? Critique groups often work best if they are quite small so each person provides and receives a lot of feedback.
